"New Tru Thoughts signings Space Captain release the double A-side “Easier”/ “Remedy”, on 24th July, ahead of a debut EP which is in development for later this year.

Self-releasing “Easier” via Bandcamp in 2013, alongside a brand new video, Space Captain gained impressive early support from the likes of Indie Shuffle, Revive and The Line of Best Fit. They subsequently put out “Remedy” in 2014, accompanied by a live video session for Sofar Sounds (NY), to further acclaim. This official double A-side release is set to showcase these fresh, early visions of the Brooklyn-based collective's sound to a wider audience. Fusing R&B, hip hop, soul and psych, Space Captain fit perfectly on Tru Thoughts’ roster among the likes of Alice Russell, Quantic and The Seshen, while singer Maralisa is particularly excited to be able to call herself a label mate of the Hot 8 Brass Band: “A dream of mine is to collaborate with Hot 8; I remember seeing them a lot at New Orleans Jazz Fest when I was younger and thinking they were just incredible”.

New School jazz alumni Maralisa Simmons-Cook and Alex Pyle co-founded Space Captain when they met at the New School in New York in 2011. Sharing piano lessons and soul and hip hop recommendations, the pair first collaborated when Alex asked Maralisa to sing on his tracks, and they soon decided to form their own project to fuse their complementary musical backgrounds. Originally from outside of Philadelphia, producer and guitarist Alex had grown up listening to and making music inspired by the golden age of 90s production (D’Angelo, Madlib). Meanwhile, over in California’s Marin County, Maralisa was listening to soul and blues records (Amy Winehouse, Taj Mahal, Nina Simone), writing melodies, singing in an a cappella group and making trips to New Orleans for family holidays; on moving to New York, she also delved deeper into the world of music by interning for Daptone Records." - Tru THoughts Records
